Taking your kid to the mall may be a fun and challenging experience. With the right approach, you can turn this outing into a day of fun and bonding.

But can you handle tantrums in public in the "right" way while wearing a good parenting hat? Better yet, is it possible to stop the entire situation from starting in the first place?

Well, we believe you can.  One of the best ways to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience is by planning ahead. You see, tantrums can be avoided before you even step outside the house. You can stop a tantrum before it starts, even when your child is upset.

Here’s how you can make your mall visit with a toddler a breeze while giving your little one an unforgettable experience.

1. Plan Ahead

When it comes to doing anything with kids, especially going out in public, planning is essential. Kids frequently have meltdowns when they are tired, hungry, or bored. So, before you go out, remember your toddler's routine.

What time do they usually nap? When do they become hungry? Knowing this allows you to plan your mall visit around their schedule, thus reducing the possibility of a breakdown.

If your kids become restless, distraction is key. The primary part of planning is looking into the mall's amenities. Most malls feature independent soft play areas making it easier for you to keep your little one entertained during your visit. Despite your best efforts, a public tantrum may still happen. It's ok.

2. Pack Smart

When heading to the mall, packing smart can make all the difference. Shopping with your toddler, or kids is a different experience altogether. It can be a successful one if you are well prepared for it!

Packing Tips for Shopping:

  • Research destination weather conditions and pack outfits accordingly.

  •  Pre-portion the formula in a storage container for easy handling.

  •  Always carry water and snacks for kids.

  •  Carry 3-5 diapers for diaper-wearing children.

  •  Carry bibs, sunscreen, hats, and other necessary protections.

If the mall has an independent kids play area, consider bringing along your child’s socks. Many play areas require them.

3. Create a Fun and Engaging Itinerary

Go shopping early or when it is least busy. When there is no crowd or queue, everything is a lot more calm, enjoyable, and efficient. Make sure that your kid has a variety of things to keep them entertained. You can use this as a good opportunity to educate your kids by,

  • Ask questions, like ‘How many?’ and ‘How heavy?

  • Ask them about the different colors they see.

  • Let them touch and describe the different textures of the foods.

  • Practice counting.

  • Look for signs and point out different letters.

Further, you can stop by a child-friendly café or restaurant for a snack or dinner. Many malls include independent kids play areas with games like Lego building, dollhouses, and Duplo play to keep children entertained while you shop.

If you're lucky enough to have any of the biggest play area in UK nearby, make it the best part of your shopping. Another interesting option is to set up a playdate for them in a kids play area

4. Be Flexible with Timing

First and foremost, make sure it's a decent time for your kids to visit the mall. Spend the afternoon or evening to have fun, play, and move about with the kids. Prepare meals & snacks in small boxes for three to four hours of outdoor activity.

Avoiding periods when they are already sleepy, hungry, or grumpy is sound advice. But, as every parent knows, a small child's mood can shift fast and unexpectedly. Sometimes, despite your greatest efforts, things do not go as planned.

In these situations, adaptability is essential. If your little one isn’t in the mood for shopping, it’s the perfect opportunity to head straight to the independent soft play area.

5. Know When to Call It a Day

Recognizing when it’s time to wrap up your mall adventure is essential for maintaining your toddler's mood and your own sanity. Don’t hesitate to cut your visit short if your child seems overwhelmed or overstimulated. Remember, a shorter, positive experience will leave them looking forward to the next trip rather than dreading it.

  • Set a Time Limit: Plan a specific duration for your mall visit to avoid overstaying.

  • Monitor Energy Levels: Keep an eye on your toddler's energy—if they start dragging their feet or losing interest, it's a sign to leave.

  • Have an Exit Strategy: Always have a plan for how to exit the mall quickly and calmly

  • Follow the Routine: Stick to your toddler's usual schedule .

  • Celebrate Small Wins: If you've had a successful outing, celebrate it.

These points can help parents be more proactive and aware of when it’s best to end their mall visit.
